My Cat Found an Unlikely Buddy in Little Lamb
by Jody Duncan
I had seen quite a couple of news stories where different species of animals developed enduring friendships, but I never thought I'd see something like that in real life. Well, that was until me and my kitten, Pearl, got to meet our little lamb, Roman. By the way, Pearl was borne of my late cat, Fridah and we developed a strong bond in those teary moments (on my part) when we mourned Fridah. I am what you would call a cat lady - single, with a great job and hella introverted. Oh, and I live with my younger sister who just cleared high school and we both adore little cute Pearl.
Anyways, back to the story, I first met Roman when I visited my local animal sanctuary. There were lots of animals of varying ages and sizes, from chicks to puppies and even cats. But my attention was particularly drawn to a white, smallish lamb, that I got to learn had a broken leg and was abandoned by the owner a few weeks back. The news brought tears to my eyes, which prompted me to adopt him and gently nurse him back to health.
Immediately Pearl saw the sickly lamb, her eyes lit up and I could tell she wanted to cuddle him and with a little encouragement from me, she did exactly that. I knew the kitty was affectionate, having shared lots of cuddles and snogs with her since she was little. However, I was pleasantly surprised that she liked our new baby and even showed him some affection. It filled me with joy though and I initiated a warm, long group hug with my babies, with my sister joining in midway.
Later that evening, when I came from the shower, I found my cat curled up beside the lamb, who was sprightly suckling from a milk bottle in my sister's hands. That was just the most heartwarming scene ever and must have I shed a tear or two.
With time, Roman fully recovered from his injury and could now move to his pen outside the house as he was a big boy now. His warm friendship with Pearl, who is 2 years old now, is as strong as it ever was and most are the nights we sit outside together, basking in the moonlight, basking in each other’s warmth. And honestly, I wouldn't have wished for a better pair of pets!
